VISUAL-SPATIAL PROCESSING

Improving how you see, move and understand space —

for reading, writing, math and life.

What Are Visual-Spatial Skills?

Recognizing and interpreting visual stimuli are complex functions of the brain. Visual processing disorders vary greatly in their severity and the aspects of perception they affect. Auditory, vestibular, and visual systems work together to process an individual’s orientation in space, to activate the musculoskeletal system in relation to gravity, and to interpret sound. When these systems are not processing information cohesively, it can affect spatial awareness and/or motor control.

We assess visual perceptual abilities in 5 categories:

  • Visual Tracking: foundational ability for the eyes to focus on an object. If weak, must integrate eye control with somatic protocols and reflexes.
  • Visual Discrimination: ability to find the one item that is slightly different among five similar pictures or objects.
  • Spatial Relationship: ability to mentally rotate or mentally unfold a 3D shape.
  • Sequential Memory: ability to view a sequence of images for five seconds and then find the images in a field without prompting.
  • Visual Closure: ability to complete a match, e.g., to fit a missing puzzle piece into the correct gap.

The next part of the visual-spatial assessment is based on other sensory-motor systems, which must be included in treatment in order to make lasting changes in cognitive abilities:

  • Determine brain organization and neurological functioning by assessing cranial nerves, sensory-motor skills, reflexes, gait, and postural coordination.
  • Identify which components of the neuro-coordinations are limiting brain and nervous system functioning.
  • Determine the precise areas needing support, i.e., specific brain region; peripheral vs central nervous system.
  • Based on those findings, we generate a therapeutic program and a home program that supports the individual’s sensory-motor development and brain organization.

Our Approach to Visual-Spatial Support

  • Sensory-Motor & Somatic Foundation: Building body-brain through movement, posture, and reflex integration.
  • Visual-Spatial Skill Training: Focused work on tracking, discrimination, spatial relationships, form constancy, sequential memory, and visual closure.
  • Integration of Sensory Systems: Visual + vestibular + auditory + proprioceptive systems working together for spatial awareness and motor control.
  • Personalized Program for Children, Teens, and Adults: Tailored based on the individual’s system status, visual-spatial profile, movement history, and goals.

What to Expect

  1. Consultation & Assessment – review visual-spatial history, movement/reflex baseline, sensory/motor profile.
  2. Program Design – customized plan based on age, visual-spatial profile, sensory/motor status and goals.
  3. Therapy Sessions – in-office somatic/reflex/visual-spatial movement work plus home practice.
  4. Home & Family Engagement – daily routines, visual-spatial tasks, and sensory-motor activities.
  5. Progress Review & Maintenance Planning – track improvements in visual-spatial function, adjust plan, transition to self-support.

We support children, teens, and adults. Whether you’ve noticed reading, writing, math, coordination, or movement challenges, or if you suspect a visual-spatial processing issue, we meet you where you are and build from your system’s status.

What Success Looks Like

Because every individual’s, visual-spatial profile is unique, outcomes vary. Many clients report stronger spatial awareness, improved visual tracking, better coordination, improved reading, writing, or math performance, and more confidence in learning and movement.

Frequently Asked Questions About Visual-Spatial Disorders

Do you require a formal diagnosis of visual-spatial disorder?

No. We assess visual-spatial, sensory/motor, and reflex/movement profiles and build support based on your needs.

Is this just for children?

No. We support children, teens, and adults experiencing visual-spatial challenges in reading, writing, math, movement or coordination.

Will this replace school or tutoring supports?

Our approach complements educational supports and therapy. We focus on the brain-body, visual-spatial, and sensor-motor systems to enhance function.

How long is the program?

Duration depends on age, visual-spatial profile, sensory/motor status and goals.

What if the issue is movement/coordination instead of reading/math?

Our integrated approach addresses coordination, movement, vestibular/visual integration and spatial awareness—so yes we work with movement/coordination challenges too.
